Colorado Trip 2015

After Uncle Daniel's wedding, we said goodbye to Ryan (who had to work) and we headed to Colorado for the week.  The kids had lots of fun and Aunt Jessica made sure to make some special memories!  The girl's got to hang out with her for an afternoon where they shopped her closet and had a fashion show.

We celebrated the Fourth at the Robbins house and had lots of fireworks.

Uncle Flop-flop was in town with Cam and Shayli decided he was her "twin."

Grandma was in baby heaven with her two newest grandbabies....Rory (born May 6) and Dexton (June 1).

The difference in size was quite remarkable for only being 3 weeks apart......

And we had to include the "coming soon picture".  All three 2015 babies together for the first time.

Capture the flag was a big hit in Pa's backyard.  It offered hours of entertainment.

And the boys decided to have a warhead battle.  I'm pretty sure Kyson lost.....

A romp in the park and a hike to the stinky tower was included in the trip.

We always make a point of visiting the bowling alley for a family bowl-off.  We feel it our civic duty to keep Uncle Philip's bowling alley lucrative.  Oh wait.  We may have bowled for free....

The newlyweds joined us....

And Uncle Skip was teaching the finer points of pool.

Uncle Travis and Aunt Jessica hosted the first ever cousin camp out in their backyard.  From the sounds of it, it was a hit!  We're talking spooky visitors and eerie noises going on outside the tent. And broken curfews....

The morning came too early for all.  The muffins and juice made up for it!

Giant human foos ball was new to the family reunion.  The kids all had a great time once they got the hang of it.  We love our aunts and uncles!!!

Me and Dexton did some hanging out in the hammock.  Obviously we had company.

The grand finale of the trip was a scavanger hunt in Grandma's neighborhood.  Hooray!!

Some of the spoils from the hunt.

Meanwhile, back on the farm.....Pa was getting some good snuggles from some cute girls.

Grandma Lu always has the magic touch rocking the babies.  She loves to sing to them.

The famous "twin day".  The red shirts with matching stars has forever made Uncle Philip and Shayli twins.

Uncle Travis making sure Kyson knows who's boss.

We made it to the top! Dexton was there too, just not pictured.

Daniel & Amanda's Wedding

We only had a few short weeks to recuperate from our new addition before we loaded the plane and headed to Denver.  Daniel and Amanda got married on July 3 in Denver.  Which meant we got to spend the weekend having fun!

We arrived in the Denver early.  Around 9:30.  We left our house around 4 AM.  It was a little rough. We had the day to spend with family so we made good use of it and hit up the Cherry Creek Mall.  That didn't actually sound like a good idea to the kids so we decided to take them to Chuckee Cheese's.  They had a great time with their cousins!

The next morning we gussied ourselves up and headed to the temple.  Everyone looked great and wedding was lovely.

Kyson found the whole thing a little lacking so he decided to climb the trees....

Dexton slept through a large portion of it.

And Shayli and Pippa had a lot of fun!! Thankful for weddings and family and temples.

Dexton is FINALLY here!

I'm happy to announce that after 9 months and 4 days, our baby has finally decided to make his appearance.  With a little nudging that is.  My due date was May 28.  That ornery little baby waited so long that he's now a June baby.  Tsk, tsk.

Dexton Matthew Reese showed up at 5:23 pm on Monday June 1st, weighing 7 lbs 12 oz and 21 inches long.

I went into the hospital at 11:00 AM to be induced.  I was 4 days late and not really doing anything.  I think at my appt that morning I was dilated to maybe a 2 and about 50% effaced.  Which really didn't seem that great considering the fact that I had foolishly assumed I would have been holding my newborn for at least a few days by then.

When I got to the hospital, their system was down.  They got me all ready and hooked up.  And then we didn't do anything.  I guess they needed the computer system to be up and running before they administered the pitocin. I was very uncomfortable and irritable.  I was strapped to the bed and strapped with monitors but I wasn't having contractions and I wasn't in labor.  It all seemed ridiculous.  By 1:20 my doctor finally showed up and broke my water.  By 2:00 I was finally started on the pitocin.

Two-thirty came and I was finally starting to feel like we were getting somewhere.  I rated my pain at the time to be about a 3.  By 3:45 I was starting to think about the epidural I didn't want to miss out on again.  I decided to play it safe and ask early because I knew it would take a bit of time to get it going.  Pain was rated to be about 5-6.  I was guessing myself to be dilated about the same, 5-6 cm.   Now, I'm not going to get on my high horse here, but I will say this.  I don't know what in Sam hill was going on, but that anesthesiologist took freaking forever!!! I tried to be patient.  I tried to keep my mouth shut.  But I finally asked what was taking so long. He arrived by 4:30 and dilly-dallied doing who knows what until about 5 when he finally decided to administer the meds. By then I knew I was in transition.  I asked to be checked and the head was right there. I started pushing around 5:15.  The epidural had not kicked in at this point yet.

Dexton arrived at 5:23 and the epidural had kicked in about 40- 50%.  An hour later I was completely numb.  I couldn't feel my legs again until about 11.  I hate epidurals.  I am a much bigger fan of the intrathecals.  This hospital doesn't offer them.

We are certainly glad he made it safe and fairly quickly.  (If you ignore the date that is...)

It was love at first sight. We were lucky to have Grandma show up a couple of days earlier.  She was able to keep the kids busy and having fun!  There was some park playing and shopping that I heard about.  But I'm pretty sure all the kids wanted to do was come and see their new little brother.  There was much talk of hanging out at the hospital room all day.  I didn't care for that idea at all.

We stayed for the required 24 hours and then we were outta there!
I let the kids pick out his coming home outfit.  I think it  was a 3-6 month size and therefore was a tad big.

Pa showed up at the end of the week to meet Dexton.  The kids had a great time playing store and chess.  We managed to fit in ice cream a time or two as well!

Dexton's first bath actually happened after the first week.  We had to document it!

We love having Pa and Grandma come and we are always sad to see them go.  This time it was goodbye for just a few weeks.....Uncle Daniel's wedding coming up!

Father's Day was just  a couple of weeks after Dexton arrived.  For Father's Day we got Ryan and the boys matching shirts.  I must say it doesn't get much cuter than that!

Okay, maybe it does.......:)

Random Thoughts

Shayli has been my best sleeper out of all of my kids.  She can sleep anywhere.  There was a day that she fell asleep in the car while I was running errands and we had just started running around.  I took her out of the car and loaded her into the front of the cart.  She laid her head down on the bar and slept the whole time I shopped through the store.

But that's not all.

Then, I loaded her back into the car and she slept.  I went to the next store and loaded her into the second cart.  She laid her head down and slept through that store.  And slept when I loaded her back into the car again!  I was dumbfounded.  Never in the history of my children has that ever happened.

So the fact that she fell asleep here at the counter wasn't really much of a surprise.  Although I did find some humor in the fact that she managed to maintain a nice grip on the stool while she was snoozing.  It just about made it a safe napping area......;)

Here we are at 35 weeks.  Getting there!

Shayli crashed into a truck parked on the street.  Apparently she was closing her eyes while she was riding her bike.  Don't ask.  I don't have the answer.

It left a super cute heart owie.  I had to take a picture.  And that's all I can say about the situation. Because if I told you I had to pay for the 2 inch scratch she left on my neighbor's truck, I'll just get mad.  Because apparently fixing scratches ain't cheap......

The Time We Lived at UC Davis......

April marked the month I've started to think of as Hospital Month. We scheduled Shayli's second surgery to finish removing her birthmark.  (If you will recall, we started this process almost 2 years ago.  Right when we were in the middle of moving. Just worked out that way. ) Anyway, we were able to schedule the surgery for first thing in the morning so we arrived at the hospital at 6 am.  We wanted to get up early because Shayli had to fast (no food or water) before the surgery.  She was a little nervous about the appointment because she has a big brother who felt the need to inform her that the "doctor was going to cut off her birthmark." Which is exactly what was going to happen but I wasn't going to tell her that! She started relaxing as soon as they gave her markers and told her she could draw on her sheets, watch a movie, or play with toys!  This was starting to feel like a party!!

Until the happy juice came.  Shayli HATES any kind of medicine.  She never wants to take it and it's always such an ordeal if she does have to.  It took some bribing but she finally swallowed it.  After that she was feeling gooooood. And was a little loopy.

We were told the surgery would take about an hour.  Her first surgery 2 years ago took about 45 minutes and the recovery was so easy.  We were expecting it to be the same kind of thing.  We were wrong.  The surgery ended up taking 3 hours!  I was starting to get a little worried. And Ryan was taking a nap. (Sounds so much like the first time I went into labor it was almost like dejevu.....)

The doctor finally came out and told us she was able to remove the rest of the birthmark which we were grateful for. Right before they took Shayli back she had mentioned that she might  have to remove half right then and the rest in a few months.  I didn't even know what to say about it. I couldn't imagine doing all this again.  I feel so bad for all those parents and children who have chronic illnesses and this is just part of their life. And then all I could think was I had called a few months after Shayli's first surgery to set up the second surgery and I was told we needed to wait at least a year so the skin could regenerate.  So we did.  And then I was told we had waited too long and the congenital nevi had grown so much that we would still need two more surgeries?!?!  I was speechless.

Anyhoo, it ended up working out for us.  After her surgery she was immediately asking for donuts.  Who can blame her?  I always feel like the post-op part is the hardest because Shayli is hungry and tired and just wants to go home.  And so was I.  We finally got cleared to leave and Shayli was able to ride in style to the hospital pharmacy where we picked up her meds.

The recovery was much more than I was prepared for.  I had no idea there would be a drain and I also wasn't prepared to make a second appointment to put her under for removing the stitches.  That's right.  We were doing it again anyway.  Possibly twice.  Once for the drain and once for the stitches depending on how the wound was healing.  Meaning fasting, hours at the hospital, babysitters for the kids.  The whole shebang. I just assumed it would be easy peasy like last time....dissolvable stitches and no problems.  Well it hasn't been terrible, but it certainly hasn't been like the last time.  There was much more skin removed with this surgery. And a few minor complications along the way.

This is what it looked like a week after the surgery.

Shayli accidentally stepped on the drain and pulled part of it out.  Luckily it wasn't a lot and we were able to wait until her appointmdent on Monday before we headed back up.  The doctor was very accommodating and squeezed us in for our Monday appointment because we had told her we would be up there anyway for Ryan's colonoscopy.  I really wanted to get both done at the same time to eliminate an additional trip plus all the arrangements necessary for the rest of my kids that has to happen when I am gone all day.  However, Shayli came down with a fever on Saturday night.

I started worrying that all my ingenius planning was going to be for nothing.  I talked with my friend who is a pediatrician on Sunday and asked what their policy was as far as putting kids under who were sick.  At this point, I was still hoping for a miracle.  Plus, I knew the drain had been in longer than our doctor wanted only because she was trying to accommodate our schedule and trying to do the drain and stitches at the same time. I decided to wait and see what happened.  I didn't have to wait long.  I got home from church and Shayli started throwing up.  Ugh.  Why?????  If the fever wasn't going to ruin the appointment, the vomiting definitely would.

I texted Dr.  Keller.  (She was kind enough to give me her personal cell phone number. See? Accommodating.)  After a lot of back and forth and discussing different scenarios, she told me we could still plan on coming and play it by ear.  We had to be up there early for Ryan anyway so poor Shayli was coming along for the ride one way or the other.  The biggest problem for me was the fact that she hadn't eaten anything since Saturday night except a string cheese and a little bit of yogurt.  And then she started throwing up.  She threw up until 5 AM.  We left for Sacramento at 7:45. Shayli was allowed clear liquids until 9 and her appt was at 1:00.  I tried to get her to drink something.  We just got a couple of sips down and that was it. I felt so bad for her and was obviously worried about her getting dehydrated.

We got Ryan all checked in for his super fun procedure and Shayli was excited to see her daddy go through some of the same things she had gone through the week before.  She was NOT happy to be back at the hospital.  She knew she had another appointment and she had already fallen apart about it a few times. She hated looking at her leg.  Anytime anyone needed to see it, she freaked out.  She cried just changing the bandages.  Like a hysterical cry.  I don't even know what to say about it. Except this.  It wasn't like last time.

Ryan had his procedure done and over with and Shayli and I were still in the waiting room at the other end of the hospital.  Someone brought Ryan over to me in a wheelchair and he stumbled over to the chairs and fell asleep. (It was acceptable this time. :)  Long story short, there was a morning surgery that took WAY longer than anyone anticipated.  We didn't get in until 3:00.  Which is annoying anytime you have a doctor's appointment but is especially  frustrating when your 3 year old hasn't had anything to eat for a day and a half and nothing to drink for hours!  I was stressed out.  She cried for water and food a few times but overall I think she was so lethargic at that point that just sitting there took effort.  I guess I should just be grateful they didn't reschedule us.  That's what happened to another family.

When they finally got to us, we decided to skip the happy juice because it would mean we would have to stay longer so she could be monitored.  Instead they let Ryan go back to the OR with them and hold her hand until she was put to sleep.  They didn't want me back there because I'm pregnant.  I was worried about Ryan keeling over but I guess going from "patient to doctor" worked out for him! Shayli's drain removal and stitch removal took about 10 minutes.  TEN MINUTES.  I guess you wait your turn for an operating room no matter what you have scheduled. Unfortunately, I had no idea how much the happy juice helped until I witnessed Shayli coming out of anesthesia without it.  It wasn't pretty.  A lot of crying and not much consoling was going on behind our curtain.  And everyone knew it.

We were just glad to get it over with and Shayli ate a whole bag of goldfish on the way home.  She deserved it.

We are currently still recovering from the whole ordeal.  Her leg split open a little bit after the stitches came out and then we had to start treating it like a giant wound.  Which it was.  A lot of bandaging and wrapping for weeks.  We are now about 6 weeks out and while the wound is getting better, there are still little hiccups.  We stopped wrapping it for about a week and it started to get infected so we're back to wrapping it every day.  But I feel like we are almost there!  Thank goodness!
